Union Down Royals, Leave Title Hopes on the Brink

Club

5th place Union KC traveled to Fort Osage High School to take on Woodland FC. Union and Woodland played to an exciting goalless draw last time these two teams met. It would not be that way this time.

This game would be characterized by large spells of Woodland keeping possession, cycling the attacks, and trying to break down the low block of Union. Union would try to hit them on the counter attack, and they did so brilliantly in the 14' when Union's forward cut across the penalty box, and finished off the counter attack with a smart low finish back across his body into the near post.

0-1

Woodland would respond right after the hydration break on a swelteringly hot day with temperatures reaching close to 100F. Joel Hayes would score the tying goal, marking his starting debut with his first goal for the club. A great interception and pass from both Ivan Morales and Iwan Roberts, also making his debut, helped set up Hayes.

Victor Lian came close for the Royals when he was through on goal, but the Union keeper made a fine save to keep him out, and preserve the draw.

Halftime

Shortly after the break, Union would once again find themselves in space after a back giveaway, and Guillen had no chance on the finish.

1-2

In the 58', Union would add a 3rd after a free kick awarded to Union was slammed into the back of the net, taking advantage of a poorly set wall.

1-3

Woodland pressed desperately to get back into the game, but would only receive a brief consolation prize when Kevin Black scored his first career goal for Woodland with the last kick of the game.

2-3

This loss is devastating for Woodland. They now must win out, and Great Plains and Columbia must drop 2 of their final matches. That is the only way Woodland can earn the title. Woodland must run the gauntlet of First City, Great Plains, rival Southside, and Columbia to earn a chance.
